Now that I have a faster computer the posting speed isn’t a problem. I’m still annoyed — I shouldn’t need a dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium 4 with 4GB of memory just to write a blog post. An 850MHz Pentium III with 768MB is slow by today’s standards, but should be good enough for text editing!

But it’s now usable for me and I can post comfortably from both my desktop and my MacBook, which isn’t quite as big and fast (2.0GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB) but has more than enough power for the job.

And I now have an Android phone (my wife got a deal on some G1s from our provider) and installed a WordPress client, so if I want to live with the mediocre keyboard I can post from the phone.

Not that I post all that often.

After some more time and experience dealing with spam comments I’ve concluded that Kermit’s comment was spam. So now you can’t go back and look at it.

But it caused me to re-examine the subject, nearly always a good thing. So I’ll leave the article up anyway.

It’s partly a hobby, partly a self-imposed obligation — I think it’s important for those with experience to share what we’ve learned with people trying to learn — partly an ego thing, which I think is true of all writing, and partly a way to get the attention of prospective employers. In a positive way, I should hope.

Hah, fixed a bug. There was a copy/paste error in the 32-bit divide, first statement after the label “looping:”, where I forgot to increment the offset from 3 to 4.

Actually, the biggest reason I wanted to post this (and the PIC code, later) is that when I was looking for divide functions for the M8 and PIC processors, I couldn’t find any. Having written them myself I decided to share them; maybe somebody else will benefit.

Granted, doing division in small embedded systems is somewhat uncommon. I’ve only needed it for scaling when the divisor was a variable. If it’s a constant you can multiply by the reciprocal, but if it’s a variable you’d have to divide to get the reciprocal anyway, so there’s no avoiding it.

This code should be easy to port to any small micro.
