About the Bare Metal Blog

This is a place for Jeffrey Nonken to share his experiences and viewpoints regarding firmware and embedded systems software development.

The name “Bare Metal Blog” came from a phrase Jeff once heard somebody use regarding the level of programming he does: “…right down to the bare metal.” Jeff has been using the phrase ever since and it even helped him get a job once.

About Jeffrey Nonken

Jeff is an embedded software / firmware developer currently working for Precision Flight Controls, Inc. in Mather, Ca (Sacramento area). He has been playing with electronics since he was very young and took his first computer class in his senior year in high school. The world hasn’t been the same since.

Professionally he has been writing software for well over two decades, mostly on small systems at a low level. While he can work in higher level languages Jeff is quite comfortable working in assembly language and is perverse enough to actually enjoy it.
